My artwork is concerned with investigating and visualising the emotional and psychological effects of insecurities that afflict people in daily life. This is prompted from reflecting on personal insecurities I do or have experienced which are at the fore front of my mind, including uncertainty in relationships, the complexities of connection, fear of other’s negative perceptions and unstable self-worth. Expressing and reflecting on these vulnerabilities is important because it provides a point of momentary ease, processing through creating, as well as emotional resonance with audiences.

This is expressed through textile wearable sculptures/costumes, with their crocheted bulbous forms being used to express the internal discomfort and severity of our own insecurities, making them as visible to the audience as they are to the wearer. Dense textiles and soft materials are essentially used for their plush textures to comfort the anxious effects associated to insecurities, whilst colour is selected based on emotional factors tied to the specific insecurity for example isolation, hope and blending in.

Performance and reactivating performances then awakens these concepts adding an additional method of expression and experimentation. This taking into account where the insecurities are experienced locationally as well as influencing factors – such as inviting audiences unpredictable interactions and having to adapt to this, to choreographing group performances with moments of unpredictability.
