Mollie Bridgewater

Fine Art

My name is Mollie and I work primarily in oil and acrylic on large scale canvas. My practice centres on painting as a way of exploring the relationship between illusionistic depth and a more expressionist form of art, allowing the surface of the painting to shift between representation and abstraction. My process is intuitive, beginning with editing of images, sketching and colour experimentation. I have become increasingly aware of how colour theory shapes the resolution of my paintings. I carefully consider how colours interact, using harmonies and contrasts to create a sense of balance, so that the work feels complete and visually cohesive. Horses are the central subject within my work due to their symbolic associations with power and freedom. I am drawn to their physicality and presence, using specific colours and layered textures to create a sense of movement and atmosphere. Ultimately, my work is about letting the painting develop through instinct, using the horse, colour, and atmosphere to bring everything together in a way that feels balanced, personal and complete.
