I am an oil painter interested in figuration, exploring shared/neutral spaces of partial to full nudity. Within my work I am drawn to water, (pools, hot tubs, beaches) exploring the boundaries of nudity in these spaces. Another constant in my practice is the colour pink, which permeates each piece, acting as a basis from and remaining a constant throughout, along with all connotations associated.
Similarly to my interest in this colour, my interest in aspects of social nudity also comes from social understandings and concepts, exploring the boundaries of whether it is considered acceptable or taboo.
My largest series of paintings stem from one image: studies, larger works and sketches have explored and examined the scene, in which many figures of different genders, ages and builds surround a pool and diving board. They range from fully clothed, partial to full nudity. Some of these works show the articles of clothing unpainted, showing the pink underpainting. These choices were deliberate, along with a consistent colour palette, bringing all figures into a sense of classlessness.
Whilst my colour palettes have stayed consistent and connected through this process, they have also been used in different ways. I don’t aim to limit the connotations of pink, or guide a viewer to any specific conclusion, leaving my work very much up to the interpretation of an audience. My paintings situate that audience as observers, separate from the scene they are presented. This leaves the possibility of discomfort, juxtaposed by the soft colour pallet and comfortable subjects, both absorbing and isolating.
